The 37th 'Committee on Fisheries' (COFI37) conference, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, is currently underway in Rome. This conference is an extremely important platform for the global fisheries and aquaculture sector, where representatives from member countries discuss in detail the conservation of fish resources and their commercial future. On the fourth day of the conference, the focus was on the sustainability of fisheries and the technological modernization of aquaculture.

As the global population grows, the role of the fisheries sector in ensuring food security is steadily increasing. For developing countries in particular, fisheries are a vital source of livelihood. This session of COFI37 has identified the challenges in policy formulation for the fisheries sector and the implementation of international agreements. Through these discussions, an attempt is being made to build a global consensus to ensure the protection of the aquatic ecosystem alongside increasing fish production.

Recent advancements in the fisheries sector in Northeastern states, including Assam, could be further modernized by the decisions taken at this international conference. Especially regarding the shift from traditional fishing to scientific farming methods, the FAO guidelines are highly relevant.

It remains to be seen how the recommendations from this conference will be implemented at the domestic level in the coming days. Experts have expressed that international cooperation for the use of technology and the training of fish farmers will add a new dimension to this sector.
