The tragic stampede at Kolkata's Charbagan Puja pandal, which claimed 19 lives, has caused shock across the country. According to latest police reports, 7 members of the Puja organizing committee have been arrested for their direct involvement in the incident. Investigators have pointed to narrow entry paths and inadequate lighting inside the pandal as the primary causes of the tragedy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Kolkata following the incident to check on the condition of the injured and expressed solidarity with the grieving families. Suvendu Adhikari accompanied him during this visit. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the state government and administration have ordered a high-level inquiry. Along with government aid for the families of the deceased and the injured, legal proceedings have also been expedited. Ensuring safety in public spaces falls under the Indian Penal Code and the State Disaster Management Act. The inquiry is placing special focus on the pandal's construction permits, fire safety arrangements, and crowd control preparations. The administration plans to issue strict guidelines for organizers to prevent such accidents in the future. Local citizens have called for closer monitoring of safety measures at Puja pandals. Hospital sources indicate that the condition of many of the injured remains critical. They are receiving advanced medical care in government hospitals. In light of this accident, security arrangements at other Puja pandals in Kolkata are being reviewed to prevent any recurrence during the upcoming Diwali and other festivals.
